Orb of Business Cards

Starting with my very first cohort, I kept a copy of every business card a students printed. Not every student did, as many of them rightfully questioned their usefulness. I personally couldn’t come up with an anecdote in which a business deal or hiring opportunity had been sealed because of one, and digital networks were already racing to outdo each other with more sensible replacements. Still, a handful of students found in the same joy I did – a small patch of self expression.

Only four years into my teaching career, the pandemic seems to have more or less snuffed out the pilot light of business cards, at least for our industry. I still mention them as a nice-to-have, but I doubt I’ll ever be collecting them in wads again at some career fair or graduation. That’s why every few months I spill them out on my desk and let me fingers comb through them.
